THE ANGOLA 3

From L to R.Herman, Robert & Albert, prior to Roberts release jan 2001
Albert(white top) with a his sister, brother-in-law and a supporter

Albert Woodfox, Herman Wallace and Robert "King" Wilkerson, still known by their campaign name The Angola 3 (King was released at the beginning of 2001), initially arrived at Angola with sentences for unrelated robberies. Wallace and Woodfox founded the first chapter of the Black Panther Party at Angola and led campaigns to stop prison rape and improve conditions of the slave plantation. Their activism made them targets of the all-white prison administration and in 1972, in an effort to stop their organizing, prison officials concocted murder charges against Woodfox and Wallace for the killing of a prison guard. Relying on the paid-for testimony of prison snitches Angola officials won convictions against the two men who received sentences of life without parole. Later, in 1972, when Wilkerson arrived at Angola his reputation as an activist preceded him, and he was immediately placed in solitary. Subsequently he was charged with and convicted for a murder he did not commit, even though he was not yet at Angola when the murder took place, was gagged with duct-tape during the trial and the actual killer admitted he'd acted alone in self-defense.

Herman & Albert are continuing their struggle to prove their innocence. Both have petitions pending before various courts and a lawsuit having spent most of their 35 years in solitary confinement. They would appreciate letters of support:

NEW ZEALAND

Free the Urewera 17!

In October 2007, a large coordinated wave of arrests and raids took place in New Zealand in which 17 activists from both ecological and social and Maori resistance movements were arrested for firearms offences. They were also threatened with charges under the Terrorism suppression act, which would have been the first time this law was used, however it will now not be applied. They are now all out on bail, but 16 people are still facing serious charges.

CHILE

There are around 50 political prisoners in chile. When the dictatorship fell in 1990 none of the laws changed, just the face and name of the regime. Therefore many who took up arms in the 80's are still inside and many continue to struggle against the 'democracy' presented by the rich & ruling class, penalised under anti-terrorist and interior state security laws. All political prisoners in chile have suffered double-sentencing, in military courts aswell as civil tribunals. All suffer psycological and physical torture.

The Mapuche tribe are actively fighting to defend their land and their forests from multinational companies.

Kamina Libre
The Kamina Libre collective, created in 1996, with the main objective of taking action for the release of all chilean political prisoners and mapuche (indigenous) prisoners who, as with many native american communities, live a daily battle to protect their lands and culture from the onslaught of transnational developers. They have made great headway for prisoners rights within the high security prison in Santiago, Chile, through riots, hunger strikes and disobediance. For example they gained the solidarity of 30 or so men in the prison to refuse visits for almost a year, untill the glass partition was brought down and people were allowed day long visits with up to 7 people in place of 4 direct family only, no contact visits. They have also secured the right to vegetarian meals and later to prepare their own meals; refused the imposition of prison uniforms; overthrew the censorship of reading materials and can now receive any kind of political material except anything to do with E.T.A.
Most recently the collective obtained the release through 'benefits' (day release pending full release) of Alvaro Rodriguez after their 3rd hunger strike in 13 months.
